1. Reproduction
The process by which living organisms produce new individuals (offspring) of their own kind is called Reproduction. It is a fundamental biological process that ensures the continuity of a species on Earth.
2. Flower: The Reproductive Part
Most plants have roots, stems, and leaves; these are called the vegetative parts. However, Flowers perform the function of reproduction in plants. After a certain period of growth, plants bear flowers, which eventually develop into fruits and seeds.
3. Stamen and Pistil
A flower contains the reproductive organs of a plant:
- Stamen: This is the male reproductive part. It consists of an anther (which produces pollen grains) and a filament.
- Pistil: This is the female reproductive part. It consists of the stigma, style, and ovary (which contains ovules).
4. Fertilization
In sexual reproduction, a male gamete (found in pollen) must fuse with a female gamete (found in the ovule).
- The process of fusion of male and female gametes is called Fertilization.
- The cell which results after fusion is called a Zygote, which later develops into an embryo.
5. Seed Dispersal by Wind
Plants scatter their seeds to different places so that they don’t all grow in one spot and compete for sunlight, water, and minerals.
- Drumstick and Maple seeds have special winged structures.
- Because they are light and have wings, they are easily carried away by the wind to far-off places.
