Do You Know
1. Sewage – Liquid Waste
Sewage is a type of liquid waste produced from homes, industries, hospitals, and other places.
What sewage contains:
- Dirty water
- Human waste
- Soap and detergents
- Food particles and chemicals
Why sewage treatment is important:
Untreated sewage can pollute water sources and spread diseases.
Examples:
Water flowing from bathrooms, kitchens, and toilets becomes sewage.
2. Phosphates – Inorganic Impurity in Sewage
Phosphates are inorganic substances commonly found in sewage.
Sources of phosphates:
- Detergents
- Cleaning products
- Fertilizers
Why they are harmful:
Excess phosphates in water increase the growth of algae, reducing oxygen levels in water bodies.
Other impurities in sewage:
- Organic impurities → food waste, oils, urea
- Inorganic impurities → phosphates, nitrates, metals
Importance:
Removing phosphates helps keep water clean and safe.
3. World Water Day – 22nd March
World Water Day is celebrated every year on 22nd March.
Purpose of the day:
- Spread awareness about water conservation
- Highlight the importance of clean drinking water
- Encourage proper management of water resources
Why it is important:
Fresh water is limited, and pollution is increasing day by day.
Activities on this day:
Campaigns, seminars, and awareness programs are organized worldwide.
4. WWTP – Waste Water Treatment Plant
WWTP stands for Waste Water Treatment Plant.
Function of a WWTP:
It cleans dirty water before releasing it back into rivers, lakes, or the environment.
Main processes involved:
- Removal of solid waste
- Separation of harmful chemicals
- Killing germs and bacteria
Importance:
Helps reduce pollution and protects public health.
Example:
City sewage water is treated in wastewater treatment plants before disposal.
5. Eucalyptus Trees near Sewage Ponds
Eucalyptus trees are planted near sewage ponds because they help absorb excess water and impurities.
Benefits of eucalyptus trees:
- Help in water purification
- Reduce bad smell around sewage ponds
- Absorb large amounts of water quickly
Environmental importance:
These trees help maintain cleaner surroundings near wastewater areas.
Example:
Eucalyptus plantations are often seen near drainage or treatment areas.
